“The Optimist Fund” History

The Optimist Clubs of PSWD, Zone 10, created the ‘Optimist Dads’ Day Dash’ in 2007 to raise funds for Pacific Southwest District Childhood Cancer programs with an annual 5k-10K race in the San Fernando Valley. Along with the Race, funds were raised through a District Raffle held on Race day. Due to high expenses for city street closures, the last Dads’ Day Dash race was in 2010. The Dads’ Day Dash Board decided to shift to sponsoring a Memorial Lecture Series at UCLA in June, which is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It also decided to DBA The Optimist Fund.” The new name better reflects its mission of supporting Childhood Cancer education, research and family support activities.

Funds went to support the research at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital Division of Pediatric Oncology/Hematology. Dr. Ted Moore’s team was developing patient specific vaccine to cure brain cancers in children. Current research is using stem cell technology to mark cancer cells and allow t-cells to attack only those cells in childhood leukemia patients.

Through the efforts of the ‘Optimist Fund’, over $10,000 has supported the research programs at UCLA. In addition, the Optimist Fund” provided financial support for the Porterville Cancer Camp, developed by the Porterville Optimist Club. This District Program has moved to the Santa Clarita Valley, and is now known as “Camp County Jamboree.” It offers young cancer patients and their siblings, a themed ‘camping’ experience for four days in September. Parents also have the opportunity to share a parallel camping experience during the same time period.
